What are the hCard and vCard Microformats? The vCard microformat is used for creating contact information files. It is a way of identifying small blocks of data in order to make them portable and thus able to be embedded in contexts using (X)HTML, RSS, Atom or anywhere (X)HTML is enabled. At the time the first edition of this book was published back in early , nearly half of all web developers reported some use of microformats, the community had just celebrated its fifth birthday, and Google reported that 94% of the time, microformats were involved in rich snippets.

Emily Lewis' "Microformats Made Simple" does just that! This is hands-down one of the best books on an important precursor to the Semantic Web. If you are overwhelmed with the Semantic Web technologies, "Microformats Made Simple" offers a "gentle" introduction and guide to implementation. I loved the book and its easy readibility!/5(9). Wisdom of Microformats. In his book, The Wisdom of Crowds, James Suroweicki says that to effectively harness the collective intelligence of a crowd - such as the Web - there needs to be the right balance between: making individual knowledge globally and collectively useful; allowing individual knowledge to remain resolutely specific and local.

Microformats have limitations, but it is a open and evolving specification for human- and machine-readable data. And people are still developing tools and implementing the approach, especially with XFN and link-based relationships using the rel attribute. BACKGROUND. I have been using microformats for the past 5 years. I'm switching to the approach for all new sites because it's — IMHO — a better separation of style and meta info.. In addition all the major search providers have adopted and now fully support the approach to microdata. It's been a pretty painless process finding equivalents most microdata.

Now we will focus on using the rel attribute for links in order to define social relationships. What Is XFN. XFN (XHTML Friends Network) is another elemental microformat—it uses just one attribute-value pair—that defines link relationships.

Microformats (sometimes abbreviated μF) are standards used to embed semantics & structured data in HTML, and provide an API to be used by search engines, aggregators, and other tools. There are two simple ways to do this, TIDY or a function like HTMLlib or loadHTML, either will load the HTML document and convert it into a usable state for XSLT. The book is missing: (1) a chapter with a clear syntax for the most common microformats, (2) a perspective view of the evolution of MF and their relevance for the web and the final users.
